Popular Diet Drug, Unpopular Side Effects

WILMINGTON -- It's called Alli, and it's the latest diet drug helping people battle the bulge.

Alli hit store shelves late last week, and it's selling out across the country, and even in New Hanover County.

It's the first over-the-counter FDA approved drug that keeps the body from absorbing fat. But the seemingly popular pill has some side effects that aren't too pleasant.

"A lot of patients have diarrhea. A lot of patients have uncontrollable bowel functions, and a lot of patients get dehydrated," said Dr. James Joachim.

Officials with Glaxo Smith Kline, the drug company that manufactures Alli, tell pharmacists and doctors to distribute the pill with discretion, and it should be used with proper diet and exercise.
