Teacher Resigns After Marrying Student

BRUNSWICK CO. -- A South Brunswick High School coach and teacher has resigned after marrying a 16-year-old student.

The student's parents had complained to the school system for months about their daughter's relationship with 40-year-old Brent Wuchae. School officials and law enforcement officers conducted an investigation.

School officials suspended Wuchae with pay at the beginning of May. Wuchae married the young girl Monday and submitted his resignation the same day.

Wuchae was a science teacher, cross-country coach, and assistant basketball coach at South Brunswick. The young girl is a member of the cross-country team.

The pair met at the beginning of the girl's freshman year when she was 14 years old.

The Brunswick County School Board met most of Tuesday and accepted Wuchae's resignation during a closed session.

Brunswick County School Board policy prohibits any teachers from engaging in a romantic or sexual relationship with a student regardless of age.

Wuchae was hired in October of 2004 and came from Guilford County.
