PENDER COUNTY -- Authorities believe a wildfire near Hampstead was set, and they think they know who lit the match.
An arrest warrant has been issued for a Topsail High School student. Authorities are looking for a young man suspected of starting the fire Saturday night behind Topsail Middle School.
An acre of woods burned for hours. The forest service and several fire departments were called out to fight the flames.
"Woods arson is a very serious thing because it destroys other people's homes and can of course destroy property. Plus, look at the firefighters going into those areas, fighting fires and attempting to save people's property. So you're putting their lives at risk as well," said Eddie King with Pender County Emergency Management.
Law enforcement officers have asked WECT to withhold the student's name until they make an arrest.
