BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- The president of Sims Hugo Neu has withdrawn his bid to build a landfill and recycling facility in Navassa.
The company will look for other areas to build, Robert Kelman said in a written statement.
"This was a truly tough decision, both personally and for our company," the statement reads. "We continue to believe in this project and we are certain it would have been good for Navassa and all of southeastern North Carolina."
The proposal had drawn opposition from both sides. Navassa Mayor Eulis Willis said the landfill would bring much-needed jobs to the town, but environmentalists and many residents were against the project.
State lawmakers passed a one-year moratorium on new landfills last year.
