TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - The 15 British sailors and marines captured and held in Iran for nearly two weeks are being released.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced he was pardoning and releasing the 15 sailors and marines as a gift to the British people.
Ahmadinejad also said Britain had sent a letter to Iran, promising that it "will not happen again." Iran insists the British troops had entered Iranian waters, but Britain has said that did not happen.
The sailors and marines were seized as the crew searched for smugglers off the Iraqi coast, starting a 13-day standoff between London and Tehran.
