Elizabeth Edwards' Cancer Returns, John Edwards Will Stay In Presidential Race

CHAPEL HILL -- Elizabeth Edwards' cancer has returned, and is now inoperable, Edwards and husband John Edwards announced Thursday.

Edwards, a democratic candidate for the presidency, will stay in the race, he said.

"The campaign goes on. The campaign goes on strongly," he said during the televised press conference.

Elizabeth Edwards discovered she had breast cancer just days before the presidential election in 2004. The newest cancer discovery is in a bone in her rib and can be treated, but not cured, she said Thursday.

John Edwards said the cancer is something she will have to deal with and treat for the rest of her life, similar to other long-term diseases like diabetes. He said he will stand by her throughout her battle, and that she will start treatments soon.
