Cleaning Up Downtown Wilmington

City leaders along with bar and restaurant owners have set new goals to improve the look of Downtown Wilmington.

Solid Waste Management hopes to clean up the streets by adding more staff and port-a-johns. Officials are also considering adding a new glass recycling program.

City Council will decide whether to amend a city sidewalk ordinance that would require property owners to clean up trash around their business.

"The important thing is that everybody knows what the situation is, what tweaks in the ordinances may be so that education is done first and then enforcement," says Alice Mitchell, a resident of Old Wilmington.

Police are also encouraging bar owners to file complaints when crowds get too rowdy in order to keep the peace on the streets.
