Almost two months ago, in our New Year's Commentary, we asked you to consider donating your time, energy and talents to a community organization this year. How are you coming with that challenge?
Here at the stations, we're trying to do our part. Just last week, a team from WECT and WSFX took the Polar Plunge to raise money for the Special Olympics. That event raised more than $50,000, and we had fun participating as a team.
Also last week, The American Heart Association, with Frances Weller as chairwoman and a dedicated group of volunteers, put on the Heart Ball and raised $145,000 for heart research.
So, are you doing your part? There are plenty of opportunities to contribute coming up. The Carousel Center's "Making Legends Local" show on March 2 at Thalian Hall; that same evening, The Literacy Council is holding their Mardis Gras event at the Coastline Convention Center.
On March 10, there's the Red Cross Ball at the Hilton. Carolina Canines is holding their "Walk For Those Who Can't" on March 17. March 30 is the date for Phoenix Employment Ministry's "Big Greek Wedding" at Thalian Hall; and on March 31 the March of Dimes is holding their Walk America event.
April 2 is Good Shepherd Ministries' Annual Golf Tournament; and, of course, there are the American Cancer Society's Relays for Life - New Hanover County's is April 20, and Pender and Brunswick Counties' are on May 4. This year's Hands on Wilmington event is April 28.
And, I'm proud to say, WECT and WSFX are participating with all of these organizations. So pick an event, or two, or three, and come on out; there are plenty of opportunities to help, have fun, and make a difference. Do your part; you'll be very glad you did.
