NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- The county and the city of Wilmington are looking to hit a homerun for local ballplayers.
The City County is expected to approve the purchase of land for a new softball and baseball complex off Murrayville Road north of the city.
County commissioners voted Monday to approve the purchase of 63 acres of land off Murrayville Road near Laney High School.
The city and county are using $6 million from the parks bond to fund the construction of five ballfields on the site, which is currently used by the Wilmington Model Flying Club.
The head of county parks says cooperation with the city has helped get work started on a number of projects that will be funded by the parks bond. Four softball or Little-League-size fields will be built, as well as a larger baseball-sized field.
