World War II Plane in Wilmington

WILMINGTON -- There's a new and old sound in the skies over Wilmington. It's a plane most people haven't seen before, but its roar will be familiar to war veterans.

The plane is called the Spirit of North Carolina, and it's the only A-26 bomber still flying east of the Mississippi.

The plane was built in 1944. It has flown through World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam.

The plane's owner, a local retired pilot, says he bought it as a labor of love and to own a piece of history.

The plane's historian, also a crew member, says the Spirit of North Carolina should make everyone in Wilmington proud. It is named in honor of all the men and women from North Carolina who have served the country.
