Crews Back to Work After Gas Leak

WILMINGTON -- A construction crew on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington is no doubt being extra careful now.

They were back out working Thursday to install new traffic lights near Saint Andrews Drive.

The crew hit a gas line Wednesday, forcing police to close the road and evacuate several homes and businesses. The road was shut down for more than an hour.

The gas line is clearly marked with yellow flags, but the developer says digging in such a tight space doesn't leave room for error.

"No matter how careful you are, we are working in very tight parameters, you know the gas, the phone, the city water, the sewer. And in essence, no matter how careful you are, sometimes these things happen," said Matthew Dijioia, the construction manager.

Construction crews still have to dig three more holes in that area, one on each corner of the intersection.
