WILMINGTON -- A natural gas leak brought rush hour traffic to a screeching halt Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters say a construction crew working along Carolina Beach Road ruptured the line, sending gas spewing into the air.
A portion of the road between George Anderson Drive and Horne Road was shut down for about two hours, snarling traffic in both directions.
About 25 people were evacuated from their homes and businesses in the area as a precaution.
The break was fixed, people returned to their homes, and traffic resumed around 6 p.m.
