Wilmington Port Takes Security Seriously

WILMINGTON -- Officials at the Wilmington Port take safety very seriously, and millions of dollars have poured through the gates since Sept. 11, 2001 to help them keep the port secure.

Radiation detection equipment, fences, lights and a state-of-the-art camera system have been installed in the past few years.

Grant money has allowed the port to move ahead of the federal government schedule and give all their employees identification cards.

But the big question is: How do ports decide which containers are inspected and how many?

Port officials say although they inspect less than 10 percent of the 25,000 containers that come off the ships, all of it is screened at some point in its voyage.
