WILMINGTON -- A local case of rabies forced 50 people to receive emergency vaccinations, and now veterinarians in the area are on high alert.
The rabid stray puppy was brought into College Road Animal Hospital. It was there for almost two weeks before it was diagnosed.
Officials say the case is the first in canines in more than 60 years.
They say this should be a wake up call that rabies is in the county, and proper precautions should be taken.
The Board of Health and Animal Control are putting together a program to remind New Hanover County vets of rabies warning signs and when vaccinations are necessary.
