OAK ISLAND -- A 13-year-old Brunswick County girl is recovering after an apparent assault over the weekend. Police say the girl was raped, possibly by several boys.
They say the attack happened Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Six boys are being investigated.
Detectives say the girl's former boyfriend, 17-year-old Roy Patterson, is the main person of interest. They believe he gave the young girl alcohol. Patterson has been arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Michael Bayne, James Simpson, Robert Little, Eric Simpson and Cory Vonegidy were also arrested.
The girl was found unconscious behind a trash can in front of her Oak Island home. A neighbor says she saw some boys in a black truck drop her off on the side of the road and take off. The neighbor called 9-1-1 and notified the girl's parents. She was taken to Dosher Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Authorities say rape charges are pending against all six boys.
"Everybody is considered involved until we can eliminate them, and that's what we're doing with the rape kits, to eliminate suspects," says Sgt. Charlie Blalock with the Oak Island Police Department.
Patterson lives in Southport. The other five boys are from out of town. All six were arrested after the incident. They have all since bonded out of jail.
