It's a brand new year. It's a time of celebration, renewal, and hope for better things. Sadly, many of us will miss the opportunity that's before us. We'll beat ourselves up...focusing on what we don't have or what we haven't done. So this year, I have a challenge for you. This New Year, instead of reflecting on what your life is missing, concentrate on what it has to offer. Instead of resolving to overcome your shortcomings, commit to sharing your talents. Your community, your family, your friends and your neighbors can all benefit from what you have to offer. We need people to entertain the lonely in nursing homes.
We need people to show our children what honesty and integrity look like in action. We need people to adopt and spruce up vacant lots. We need people to coach and celebrate the achievements of special Olympians. There are dozens of community organizations that do wonderful work, but require committed people willing to donate their talents, time and energy in order to get that work done.
Don't know where to begin? You can start with your churches and schools, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, The Red Cross and The Salvation Army, or one of the organizations that support the homeless like The Good Shepherd Center, or victims of domestic violence like the Domestic Violence Shelter. For other options, you can try the Cape Fear Volunteer Center.
This year commit to sharing your talents, and I can guarantee you 2007 will be a very rewarding year, indeed!
That's what we think. Tell us what you think.
