Sheriff Department Mourns Loss

WILMINGTON -- He was considered a medical miracle, and he was loved by many. The New Hanover County Sheriff's Department is mourning the loss of one of their own.

Retired Captain Jerome Wayne Greer, Jr. died two days before Christmas after a long battle with a liver transplant. Greer was the longest living liver transplant recipient. He was 54 years old.

His family said he struggled over the years with pain and failing organs related to his transplant. But, they say despite the obstacles he never gave up on his passion for serving the public.
