WILMINGTON -- Robert Morgan and his wife were deeply saddened when they heard the news of President Gerald Ford's death. They say America lost a great president, but to them, it was the loss of a personal friend.
Morgan was a freshman United States Senator from North Carolina in 1976, the year Ford took office. He said they had a special connection and became friends from the beginning.
He spoke highly of Ford's integrity and upbeat personality, and he says the president was an inspiration to him in politics and in life.
