Domestic Abuse Increases Around Holiday Season

WILMINGTON -- Officers say they respond to more domestic violence situations over the holidays.

Wilmington police have answered more than 5,000 911 calls for domestic violence this year. Over the holiday weekend, those numbers are expected to rise.

On Monday, a Lee County mother was kidnapped by her estranged husband and taken to Carolina Beach. Her daughter found her car ditched on the side of the road, with the engine still running and the window broken. She later was able to convince her husband to take her back.

Also, on Tuesday, a Whiteville man was arrested after taking his ex-girlfriend against her will.

Police say many factors, such as stress and alcohol, contribute to domestic violence and abuse around the holiday season.
