Wilmington Robbery Turns Deadly

WILMINGTON -- Police say someone shot a clerk working at the M & M Food Market on 7th and Ann Streets around 11:00 a.m. The clerk died at the hospital.

Word of the killing sent shock waves through the neighborhood near downtown Wilmington. Neighbors say they don't understand why anyone would harm Mohammed Abdelhamid. The clerks at the market are always willing to help.

As the Abdelhamid's family gathered at the market, police tried to find the gunman. They say he used a small handgun. They're reviewing security camera video for more clues. They say he is a black man, 5'10 to 6 feet tall, slim in build, and is about 18 to 24 years of age.

Because of the shooting, Gregory Elementary and Williston Middle Schools were on lock-down for precautionary measures.

Police are working with sheriff's deputies to find out if there's a link between the M & M shooting and three overnight robberies. Two were on North College Road at the Handy Hugo and Kangaroo store. The other was at the Scotchman on Carolina Beach Road at 5:00 a.m.
