Last week's "Consider This" was a reminder that we all share a responsibility to safeguard children. After it aired, we received this response from the New Hanover County Department of Social Services.
"We very much appreciate your editorial reminding everyone that child protection is a community obligation. I am concerned that your statement did not remind your audience that North Carolina law requires anyone who suspects that a child is abused or neglected to report that case to the Director of the County Department of Social Services. This law is mandatory upon everyone regardless of position. Reports can be made anonymously. After hours and on weekends, reports can be made through the 911 system. We will respond."
So here's a list of numbers for Children's Protective Services in the six surrounding counties:
County Children's Protective Services
Bladen County: 862-6800
Brunswick County: 253-2077
Columbus County: 642-2800
New Hanover County: 798-3420
Pender County: 259-1240
And while we're on the topic of children, we want to remind you that this is the last week of our Holiday Smiles Toy Drive. Unwrapped toys are being collected at BB&T locations and elsewhere throughout the area. For a complete list of locations, click on the Holiday Smiles Toy Drive block in the upper right-hand corner of our website at www.wect.com. Remember, there's no greater joy in life than helping children in need.
That's what we think. Tell us what you think.
