WILMINGTON -- A new study from the United Health Foundation ranks North Carolina as 36th in the nation when it comes to healthy states, but a local group is helping Wilmington climb to the top of the list for healthy cities in the state.
Cape Fear Healthy Carolinians has created two walking trails in the Port City. One is in Forest Hills. The newest is in downtown Wilmington.
The group helps fight obesity in the Cape Fear region through education, programming, and the designation of neighborhood walking trails. Organizers say there is more to it than just the trails.
"We've developed strategies for exercise, nutrition, and community education to get the word out. If they are overweight, they really need to address it and know that there are ways to help them become a healthy weight," says Lynn Smithdeal.
Healthy Carolinians is hoping to create other walking trails throughout the area.
