Businesses Take Extra Precaution with Gift Cards

WILMINGTON -- Employees at Boater's World on South College Road moved their gift cards behind the counter after they saw a WECT exclusive report about a gift card scam.

Crooks grab a gift card and write down the numbers on the back. They wait a few days for someone to buy the card, then call in to find out if it has been activated and the balance. They use that information to buy items online.

When the real owner of the gift card tries to redeem it, the crook has already spent the money.

Employees at Boater's World say from now on, they'll keep their cards behind the counter.

Local detectives say so far no one has reported falling victim to this new scam in our area, but cities all over the country have been hit.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
