WILMINGTON -- You try to redeem your Christmas gift card, and seconds later the cashier tells you there's no money on it. That's what's happening to victims of a new gift card scam that has been hitting holiday shoppers across the country.
Here's how it works: Scammers write down the number on the back of a gift card and wait a couple days for the card to be purchased. Then they call in to find out if the card has been activated and ask for the balance. Then the scammers go for a shopping spree online.
Wilmington and New Hanover County detectives say they are aware of the new scam, but so far no victims have surfaced.
Some Wilmington stores are working to stop the crime before it happens. They're putting the gift cards behind the register with the cashiers.
