Gov. Easley Waits for Crews to Assess Damage

COLUMBUS COUNTY -- Damage assessment teams are in the storm-ravaged areas assessing the damage and helping the victims.

Gov. Mike Easley said he will wait to hear back from those experts, then decide how best to speed state and federal assistance to the victims.

Easley warns drivers to stay off the roads near Riegelwood; he says the best way to help right now is to stay out of the way.

"Often after the event, sightseers want to get out. Please stay home today," Easley said at a press conference. "Let the first responders do their work. Stay where you can at least be in touch with the information put out by local enforcement and heed that warning."
