Timeline of a Tornado

COLUMBUS COUNTY -- The damaging severe weather that struck Riegelwood early Thursday morning took many people by surprise, partly because the storm moved so quickly.

The National Weather Service issued tornado watches for the Columbus County area shortly before midnight Wednesday night.

The watches turned to warnings between 6:25 and 6:30 Thursday morning.

The funnel cloud touched down about ten minutes later.

The tornado spun through a mobile home area on Holly Tree Lane and Old Lake Road.

It appears the tornado then jumped over N.C. 87 and slammed into a residential area there.
