WILMINGTON -- After suffering through her mother's suicide, a Wilmington high schooler walked for her mom's memory Saturday, and for the disease that ultimately claimed her life.
Rita Stefureac died last May after being diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder.
Now, six months later, her daughter Kristin is trying to make sense of the disease and bring awareness to the mental health illness that took her mother's life.
About 60 people walked for Rita on Saturday, ending at a bench memorial for Stefureac.
Kristen says she doesn't want anyone else to have to go through the suffering that her family has.
Kristen organized the walk as part of her senior high school project. She raised about $2,000 for the Cape Fear chapter of the Mental Health Association.
