Doctor Wanted for Attempted Murder is Dead

CLINTON, S.C. -- The Wilmington doctor accused of trying to kill his wife has now killed himself, New Hanover County detectives confirmed Thursday.

Campus security guards at Presbyterian College found Dr. Joseph Arena on campus Thursday afternoon.

Officials say a struggle began and Arena pulled out a gun and shot at the officer. He missed, then turned the gun on himself.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Arena's death ends a massive search that began Tuesday morning when authorities say he strangled his wife and left her to die in the driveway of their Masonboro Loop-area home.

When she awoke, Arena's wife called 911. She has been treated and released from the hospital.

Arena was an emergency room physician at New Hanover Regional Medical Center and also practiced at Pender Memorial Hospital.
