Three Family Members Die in Brunswick Co. Wreck

ASH -- A Brunswick County family has suffered a devastating loss. Three members are dead after their car slammed into a tractor trailer Sunday night.

Joseph Stoddard, Jr., 28, his 18-year-old brother Brandon Bland and his 16-year-old sister Jussica Stoddard were driving along Whiteville Road when they lost control of the car. The car caught fire after the impact.

This is the second tragedy the family has suffered in only a month. Just three weeks ago their house burned to the ground, leaving them with almost nothing.

A trust fund is being set up for the family at the BB&T Bank.

The highway patrol says deadly accidents like this are increasing sharply. Sunday night's wreck brings the number of accident deaths in New Hanover and Brunswick counties to 38. The highway patrol says that is a record.

Officials say a number of factors cause deadly wrecks. The most important thing you can do to stay safe is slow down.

Troopers say the number of bad accidents is expected to increase with the Thanksgiving and Christmas travel seasons coming soon.
