Boiling Spring Lakes Standoff Ends in Shooting

BOILING SPRING LAKES -- A standoff Monday morning ended when a woman shot herself in the stomach.

Police say Tammy Sheila Bass, 46, threatened at least two people, including a police officer, with a handgun.

The incident started with a 911 call from Leland early Monday morning, where police say Bass threatened her husband's friend with a gun.

Bass then drove to her Boiling Spring Lakes home, which was surrounded by officers from the Brunswick County Sheriff Department, the Brunswick County SWAT and the Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department.

Bass pointed a gun at an officer, prompting Police Chief Richard White to enter the house with her son in an attempt to calm her down.

He managed to take the handgun away from her, but while White was leading Bass outside the house, she pulled out another gun and shot herself in the abdomen.

Bass was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where she is recovering.

Neighbors say they are used to seeing lots of police activity at the Bass home.

Bass's family members told WECT that she was on depression medications, and it is not unusual for her to inflict pain on herself.
