School Board Candidates Face Off on TV

WILMINGTON -- Four candidates for the New Hanover County School Board agreed on many issues Saturday, but clashed on one.

For the first time in the campaign, the candidates faced off in a televised forum Saturday in  WECT's studio.

WECT and two cable channels will air the question-and-answer session closer to Election Day.

Three candidates for re-election, Ed Higgins, Janice Cavanaugh, and Steve Bilzi, defended how the board used public participation as it adopted its controversial elementary school redistricting plan. Challenger Nick Rhodes said the board acted in secret.

Six candidates are running for four slots on the board.

Challenger Jack White and incumbent Don Hayes couldn't attend Saturday's forum, which was sponsored by the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce.

Election Day is November 7.
