The Odds of Winning the $203m Powerball Jackpot

WILMINGTON -- With an estimated jackpot of $203 million, Wilmington convenience stores have sold thousands of Powerball tickets since Wednesday to folks who want to try their luck at winning big.

But what are their odds of winning that jackpot?

A close examination of the ticket should reveal that, the chances of winning the jackpot are 1 in 146 million.  Those are some pretty lousy odds -- far less likely than other events that most of us don't expect to happen to ourselves, according to the website

  • 1 in 615,000 chance of dying from exploding fireworks
  • 1 in 33 of giving birth to twins -- if you are a woman
  • 1 in 88,000 to dating a supermodel -- though it is pretty slim, it is more than 1,000 times more likely than winning the Powerball

If you are an author, your chance of writing a New York Times Bestseller is only 1 in 220.

Stargazers have a 1 in 3 million chance of seeing a UFO.  But be careful: there's a 1 in 10 million chance that you will get hit by something falling from a passing airplane.

So, write a book, ask out a supermodel, and be careful when you look up at the sky.  You can still buy your Powerball ticket, but don't start spending your winnings just yet.
