Wilmington Man Arrested for Statutory Rape

WILMINGTON -- A Wilmington man has been arrested for statutory rape.

Kevin Laymon is accused of having sex with a 15-year-old girl he met at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in 2004.

Laymon, who was 24 at the time, was performing community service for a traffic violation. The girl was volunteering as a candy striper.

According to the sheriff's department, the girl told her sister that she had sex with Laymon. The sister in turn told their mother.

Laymon was arrested Friday and charged with statutory rape, statutory sex offense, and two counts of indecent liberties.

Law enforcement officers worry that there may be more victims.

"My concern is that he is possibly a predator," said Detective Sergeant Susan Johnson. "He has worked around young people. He likes being around young people. There may possibly be other young victims out there. If there are, we would like to know about them."

The sheriff's department is asking other victims to come forward.
