Life Expectancy Varies Across America

WILMINGTON -- Harvard researchers have determined that America is not one nation when it comes to life expectancy, but rather eight separate "Americas."

Most of North Carolina falls into the largest of the eight groups, which includes about 213 million Americans expected to live for 78 years on average.

The other seven groups, which comprise roughly thirty percent of the population, show great variation in life expectancy.

Health Department employees said that New Hanover County often stands out among surrounding counties for its access to healthcare and opportunities for active lifestyles.

Health officials said that the expanding green space and parks in the Wilmington area can only aid in improving the length of lives.

However, as a state, North Carolina ranks in the bottom 12 on longevity, with the life expectancy of just under 76 years.
