WILMINGTON -- WECT has learned than Abron Kelly, 11, successfully underwent a kidney transplant surgery Monday evening and was on her way to recovery.
The family received a phone call from Duke Hospital Monday, that a matching kidney had been found for Abron Kelly.
The Wilmington girl had been waiting for a new kidney to save her life. She initially went through a mother-daughter transplant, after her mother Debra Kelly donated a kidney.
That transplant was not successful, and Abron Kelly's condition worsened. The family was hoping that her father would be able to donate.
A fundraiser for Abron Kelly is set for Thursday. Abron is now recovering. Doctors said that everything went well.
