New Church Gives Away Free Gas

NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- About 200 drivers filled up their gas tanks for free Saturday morning at the Wal-Mart gas station at Monkey Junction.

The free gasoline was sponsored by the Lifepoint Church -- a new congregation in Wilmington trying to spread its message by giving a free gift to drivers.

The church allocated $3,000 for the free gas.

Volunteers planned to give out the gas for several hours, but ran out in just an hour.

For Evelyn Jones, the gas giveaway came at just the right time.

"I got paid for two weeks and I thought, 'how am I going to make it for the rest of the month?'" said Jones. "I was able to pay my bills, and someone called and said they were giving gas."

"It was an answer to my prayers today," Jones continued. "It really was."

More than 50 members of the church helped at the gas station, pumping gas for anyone who pulled up.
