Stunt Performance Ends in Plane Crash

TOPSAIL ISLAND -- A biplane crashed into the water near Topsail Island in front of a group of spectators Sunday afternoon.

Officials said the plane crashed shortly after 2 p.m.

Witnesses told WECT that the biplane was performing aerobatic stunts when its engine failed. They said moments later, the pilot parachuted out of the plane and fell into the water.

He was picked up by a shrimp boat and was expected to make a full recovery.

The FAA and Coast Guard are investigating the accident.

A small oil slick appeared at the location of the crash, where the plane remained underwater.  Officials said it was up to the owner to recover the pieces of the plane.
