Proposed Law to Ban Sex Offenders from Wilmington Parks

AUGUST 2, 2006 --

If one Wilmington City Council member has his way, sex offenders could be banned from city parks for life.

Jason Thompson says he plans to push for a law keeping people convicted of sex crimes away from parks.

Woodfin, a town near Asheville, already bans sex offenders from its parks. A state Superior Court judge upheld the law Tuesday.

Thompson says a ban like that will help keep children safe, but the ACLU is opposing the ban. The group says it violates the rights of sex offenders and gives parents a false sense of security.
