JUNE 29, 2006 -- The battle over school redistricting in New Hanover County isn't over yet. School Board Member Steve Bilzi says he wants to reopen the process of adopting a plan.
Bilzi was out of town when the board, in a surprise move, approved a map for redistricting elementary schools in New Hanover County.
The plan includes turning Freeman and Snipes Schools into magnet schools. It also limits the number of children bused to distant schools. This plan surfaced just minutes before the school board vote.
Since the vote, the school board has been sharply criticized for pushing it through without any chance for public comment.
Bilzi says he generally supports the plan but believes residents should have an opportunity to speak out about it before a final vote.
Bilzi says he will raise the issue and try to reignite the debate at a board meeting on July 11.
