Columbus County Resort Offers Clothes Free Vacation

MAY 31, 2006 -- Columbus County is in a good location to attract tourists. Parts of the county are less than half an hour from Myrtle Beach and Wilmington.  The rural county has even set up a tourism office to bring people to the area.  But, there's one resort that you won't find in the travel brochures.

Ignore the naked woman in the garden and those naked people on the porch and Coventry Resort looks like any other vacation destination.  It has an L-shaped pool, a club house, even a park for the kids.  And with warm weather, it's no wonder Manager Gloria Waryas is busy this time of year.

"A lot of people say oh my gosh, I could never take my clothes off. It's kind of the American institution not to show your body unless you're a perfect ten," says Waryas.

Perfect ten or not, many people travel from hours away to spend their weekends in the tobacco field turned nudist resort near Tabor City. Some are people you may not suspect such as pilots, sheriffs, and teachers.

Beverly has been a nudist for 15 years. In addition to meeting new people, she tends a row of vegetables at the club. Jessie, who is from the Greensboro area, really enjoys the garden.  In addition to the company of friends, it also appears this summer will yield a good crop of corn, just in time for the potluck suppers in the clubhouse.
