Wilmington Race Riot Report Released in Raleigh

MAY 31, 2006 -- The 1898 Wilmington Race Riot report was released Wednesday morning in Raleigh. The report details accounts of what happened during the rioting more than a hundred years ago, where several African-Americans were killed.

Historically, it's been described as a spontaneous riot, but the report concludes racial violence was actually a calculated white supremacist insurrection that reshaped North Carolina politics and black voting rights for decades.

The report was compiled by a state-appointed commission that studied the incident for six years.

Members of the 1898 Wilmington Race Riot Commission are now urging lawmakers to consider economic reparations in Wilmington.
