Holiday Travel Numbers High Despite Rising Gas Prices

MAY 26, 2006 -- Even though there's no relief in sight at the pump, high prices aren't keeping drivers off the road for the Memorial Day weekend.

According to AAA Carolinas, nearly 80 million travelers will be driving over the holiday weekend.

People traveled long distances to enjoy Wrightsville and Carolina Beaches. They say if it weren't for splitting gas costs with friends, road trips may not have been possible.

Besides splitting gas costs with buddies, people are also traveling shorter distances and saving on hotel accommodations by booking early.
