Jail Gets Creative to Deal with Crowding

MAY 25, 2006 -- Officers at the New Hanover County jail are having to be creative in their attempts to house inmates. The upcoming holiday weekend and backlogs at the state level have the jail almost full.

The transferring of several dozen inmates by the Department of Corrections was delayed this weekend. That meant officers at the county jail had to shift some of the inmates around. Officers say it was never a question of having someone go to sleep without a bed, but rather it's just part of the natural cycle a jail undergoes.

The jail's capacity is close to 550 beds. The more than 40 inmates that caused the congestion have been transferred to the Department of Corrections.
