MAY 18, 2006 -- Thousands of oysters were collected Thursday, but they're not headed to local restaurants. They're headed back out in the water. It's part of an oyster restoration project at Airlie Gardens. Volunteers filled 700 bags with oyster shells Thursday afternoon. They'll eventually be put back in the water to restore oyster reefs along the Bradley Creek shoreline at Airlie Gardens and the Masonboro Sound. Thursday's oyster bagging was the kick-off of the two year restoration project.
