MAY 3, 2006 -- One of the most hotly contested races in the primary elections was the Democratic nomination for House District 18.
District 18 includes parts of New Hanover and Pender counties.
Voters were asked to decide between longtime representative Thomas Wright and challenger Laura Padgett.
Incumbent Thomas Wright will serve another term.
Challenger Laura Padgett conceded to Wright with several precincts still not reporting. Of those that had reported, Wright won by more than 70 % of the vote.
Both candidates agree the race got heated at times. The two candidates did not see eye to eye on the Hugo Neu landfill in Navassa. Wright said he didn't consider it an issue because it's out of the district. Padgett disagrees and says it will impact the district.
However, Wright said his record speaks for itself and it appears as if voters agree.
