Wilmington Woman Works to Save Dogs at Shelter

APRIL 27, 2006 -- After WECT aired a story on the Columbus County animal shelter putting animals to sleep, a Wilmington woman reached out to help.  Nancy Sowers rescued several dogs from the shelter, and she's adopted out two others. And she's not stopping there. She's working with Adopt an Angel to find the dogs loving homes, so she can rescue others from the shelter in Whiteville.

She says she's shocked the shelter has around forty cages, but they never fill them up.

"There was only one row of dogs, and three whole rows that didn't have any dogs in it. Maybe three of them were on hold. What frustrates me is that they have three days, and only three days. It doesn't matter if they have all those cages open."

All the animals Sowers has rescued have been spayed or neutered and have had all their shots.  If you're interested in adopting one of these furry friends, they'll be at Petco on South College Road this Saturday and Sunday, April 29 and 30, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. or you can call Sowers at (910) 799-4050.
