City Working to Improve Sewer Line

APRIL 24, 2006 -- The City of Wilmington is taking steps in improve the failing Northeast Interceptor Sewer Line.

The city sent a letter to the State Division of Water Quality today.

The letter highlights several steps the city is taking to improve the line.

Among the steps, the city says it will look into ways that waste water can be averted from the pipe.

They will also use testing and inspections to prevent storm water runoff from getting into the pipe.

The city also wants to educate residents and ask them to report any potential problems in the line.

State officials put a moratorium on the Northeast Interceptor, which carries waste from parts of Wilmington, New Hanover County, and all of Wrightsville Beach.

Construction of a new line should be complete by November.
