Homegrown Fruits are Popular at Local Schools

APRIL 20, 2006 -- Some homegrown fruit is proving very popular in local schools.  School orders for locally grown strawberries are up 13 percent. Schools can order the fruit through the state "Farm to School" program.  New Hanover County Schools participate in that program. And strawberries aren't the only fresh foods on students' trays. Through the "Farm to School" program schools can order watermelons, cantaloupes, tomatoes, apples, broccoli and even cabbage.
