Small Town Mourning After Four Men Killed in Boating Accident

MARCH 17, 2006 -- The town of Banner Elk, North Carolina is in mourning after three men from the area were killed in a boating accident in Brunswick County.

All four men were volunteer firefighters in the town of Banner Elk. Three of the four firefighters attended Lees McRae College.

Authorities say six men, all volunteer firefighters, left Ocean Isle Beach Wednesday on a fishing trip.

Their boat capsized some time Wednesday afternoon near Holden Beach.

Two of the men swam safely to shore. After a ten hour search, Coast Guard crews recovered the bodies of the other four men.

An investigation is underway to fill in the blanks of the timeline.

Coast Guard officials do tell us the winds were strong and water temperatures were in the fifties.
