Four Dead After Boat Capsizes Off Holden Beach

MARCH 16, 2006 -- What started out Wednesday as a fun fishing trip for six buddies at Ocean Isle Beach has turned into a tragedy. Four of the men are dead. Two of them survived.

Thursday morning, Coast Guard officials recovered the bodies of Kevin Bell, Griff Lygrely, Michael Shope and Archibald McFadden about four miles off the shore of Holden Beach.  All of the men were volunteer firefighters from Banner Elk, North Carolina.

Coast Guard officials believe the men left the Ocean Isle Beach area around noon Wednesday. Their 18-foot boat capsized shortly after that.

The two survivors say at some point the men decided to leave their capsized boat and swim for shore. Those two didn't make it to safety until 11:00 Wednesday night.
